RSVP is one of those four letters everyone sees on an invitation and few people can explain. The short version: it is a polite request to tell the host whether you are coming. This guide covers the RSVP full form, the RSVP ka matlab in Hindi (कृपया उत्तर दें - please reply), what to write when you reply in both English and Hindi, and how the whole thing works on Indian wedding cards and on WhatsApp today.

RSVP full form and what it stands for

RSVP stands for the French phrase répondez s’il vous plaît, which translates to “please reply.” It is not an English abbreviation at all - the four letters are simply the first letters of four French words. When a card says RSVP, the host is asking every invited guest to confirm, either way. A “no” is exactly as useful as a “yes,” because the host is counting plates, chairs, cars and rooms - and an unanswered invitation is the one that ruins the count.

RSVP ka matlab in Hindi (कृपया उत्तर दें)

RSVP ka matlab Hindi mein hota hai - कृपया उत्तर दें, yaani “please reply.” Agar kisi nimantran par RSVP likha ho, to iska seedha matlab hai ki aayojak aapse yeh jaanna chahte hain ki aap aa rahe hain ya nahi. Bahut log sochte hain ki RSVP ka matlab hai “sirf aane wale jawab dein” - yeh galat hai. Host ko dono jawab chahiye: haan bhi, aur naa bhi. Isi se woh khaana, baithne ki jagah aur intezaam theek se kar paate hain.

In pure Hindi, the request is often written as कृपया अपनी उपस्थिति की पुष्टि करें (kripya apni upasthiti ki pushti karein) - please confirm your presence. On modern cards you will also see the Hinglish version, “kindly confirm,” with a name and phone number underneath.

RSVP on Indian wedding cards (shaadi ka card)

On an Indian wedding card, RSVP usually sits near the bottom, next to one or two names and a phone number - something like “RSVP: Rahul 98XXXXXXXX.” Those are the people to call or message with your answer. Sometimes a date is added, so the family can give the caterer and the halwai a final headcount a week or two before the wedding. On a joint family card you may also see सादर आमंत्रण (a respectful invitation) at the top and the RSVP request at the bottom - the two ends of the same conversation.

For a big shaadi guest list, collecting these replies by phone gets messy fast. That is why more families now send a digital shaadi card design on WhatsApp with the answer built in, instead of chasing 200 people one call at a time.

What to write when you reply

Reply as soon as you decide, do not wait for the deadline, and answer for exactly the people named on the card. Here are ready-to-send replies in English:

  • Yes: “Thank you for the invitation - we would love to come. Two of us will be there.”
  • No: “Thank you so much for inviting us. We are sorry we cannot make it this time, and we wish you all the best.”
  • Not sure: “Thank you for the invite. I am not certain yet - I will confirm by [date].”

How hosts collect RSVPs on WhatsApp today

An RSVP only works if the guest actually replies, and most people forget the moment they have to make a phone call or open a website. WhatsApp changes that math: the invitation lands where your guests already are all day, and answering is a single tap. Eventi sends your card as a WhatsApp message with “haan / naa” buttons built in, and every reply drops into one live list - so you always know who is coming without counting by hand. It works the same way for a wedding, a free birthday invitation on WhatsApp, or a housewarming. You can start free, no credit card, and send your first invitation today.
