Death announcement

# How to write a death announcement
when the words will not come.

A death announcement tells people who has died, when, and what happens next. It does not need to be eloquent. It needs the name, the date, the time and place of any service, and a line about how the family would like to be supported. This page explains how to write one in plain words, with examples you can adapt, and links to announcements for a text message, social media, a family member, a memorial service and a funeral notice.

[Let people know](/solutions/memorial-services)

One message to everyone, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons.

## What a death announcement needs to say

Start with the fact. The name of the person who died, their relationship to you if you are writing on behalf of the family, and the date. People read the first line and brace themselves, so put the news there rather than after a paragraph of lead-in.

Then the arrangements, if they exist. The kind of service, the place, the date and the time. If arrangements are not yet made, say so and promise to follow up. A message that says details will follow is better than silence while you wait for the funeral home.

Close with what you would like from people. Come to the service. Send a memory instead of flowers. Give the family a few days of quiet. Donate to the hospice. One request, stated plainly, spares everyone the guessing about what would help.

## Death announcement examples

Three announcements in different registers. The pages linked below carry more for each situation.

### Formal and traditional

> Deep sorrow in the Okafor household: \[Name\], husband of Adaeze and father of three, passed on \[Date\] after a long illness, at home with his children beside him. Funeral: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. In place of flowers, the hospice that cared for him would welcome donations.

> \[Name\]'s family invites you to a graveside service, \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. Cemetery gates open half an hour earlier and cars park along the eastern lane. Please tell us whether you are coming so the funeral directors set out enough chairs under the canopy.

### Personal and plain

> Dear friends, our mother, \[Name\], passed away early this morning. We are still making arrangements and will send the time and place as soon as we have them. Until then, please do not feel you need to call. Knowing you are thinking of us is enough.

## Announcements for each situation

Each page has eight to twelve examples with placeholders, in both religious and secular wording.

### Heartfelt examples

Short, religious and secular announcements for the notice itself, the wider circle and the workplace.

### Informing someone by text

How to tell a close friend or relative in a message, and how to ask for a call when a text is not enough.

### A family member

Announcements for the death of a mother, father, grandparent, sibling, spouse or partner, written in the first person.

### Memorial service

Templates that give the time and place of a memorial, handle a change of venue and thank people afterward.

### Social media

Posts for Facebook, captions for Instagram, and messages for a WhatsApp status or family group.

### Funeral notice

Free funeral announcement templates with viewing, service and burial details, religious variants and practical lines about parking and streaming.

## What to leave out

### The cause, unless the family wants it known

After a long illness or suddenly is enough for most readers. Medical details belong in conversations, not announcements.

### Blame or circumstance

Nothing about the hospital, the accident or who was there. The announcement is not the place to process what happened.

### Addresses of the home

Give the service venue in the announcement. Send the home address privately to the people the family wants to receive.

### Borrowed phrases

Lost their battle, in a better place and gone too soon are read a thousand times a day. The person's own words or habits say more.

## Sending it to everyone who needs to know

In the days after a death, someone ends up repeating the same time and place on the phone for hours. The memorial services page on Eventi sends the announcement to the whole list at once, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons, so the family knows who is coming without a single call. Reminders go only to those who have not answered, inside daytime hours, and people without WhatsApp receive the same message as a text.
