Death announcement examples

# Death announcement examples
that say what needs saying.

A heartfelt death announcement does not need poetry. It needs the person's name, the day they died, a line that sounds like them, and the time and place of the service. These twelve samples of death announcements are grouped into short and plain, religious and secular, with placeholders for the name, date, place and time. Take the one closest to your situation, change the details, and send it to the people who need to know.

## What makes an announcement heartfelt

One true detail. A phrase the person used, a thing they did every Sunday, the way they answered the phone. Readers who knew them will recognize it, and readers who did not will understand who was lost. It does more than any adjective.

Plain verbs. Died, passed away, left us. Each is fine. What reads as cold is not the word but the absence of anything personal around it. What reads as overwrought is a string of borrowed phrases. Say it the way you would say it to a friend across a kitchen table.

The practical details, clearly. Grief makes people forget what they read, so the place, date and time should be easy to find again: their own sentence, near the end, in the same order every time.

## Samples of death announcements

Twelve examples in three registers. Replace \[Name\], \[Date\], \[Place\] and \[Time\].

### Short and plain

> \[Name\] died on \[Date\]. She was 84 and had spent the spring in hospice, complaining about the food and charming the staff. A small service for family and close friends takes place at \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. More when we are able. Thank you to everyone who visited her these last months.

> Our father, \[Name\], passed away last night at the hospital. He was not in pain and his sons were with him. We are gathering at the house this week and would be glad to see you, no need to call ahead. Funeral arrangements will follow by the weekend.

> Sad news from the Alvarez family: \[Name\] died on \[Date\] after a short illness. Visitation: \[Place\], \[Date\], from \[Time\], rosary at seven. No flowers, please, just come, and bring a photograph for the memory table if you have one from the restaurant years.

> \[Name\], my brother, died suddenly on \[Date\]. We are stunned and still learning what happened. Funeral: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. Please pass this on to anyone who knew him from the firehouse, the softball league or the Tuesday poker game. He talked about all of you.

### Religious

> It pleased the Lord to call home His servant \[Name\] on \[Date\], in the ninetieth year of her life. Funeral worship is at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Interment follows in the churchyard, then a luncheon in the fellowship hall prepared by the women's circle. Blessed are those who die in the Lord.

> Baruch Dayan HaEmet. We mourn \[Name\], who died on \[Date\]. Levaya: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. The family sits shiva at Miriam's apartment through Thursday, with minyan each evening and visiting hours posted on the door. May his memory be for a blessing.

> Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Our beloved \[Name\] returned to Allah on \[Date\]. The janazah prayer will be offered at \[Place\] after Dhuhr on \[Date\], with burial immediately afterward at the Muslim cemetery. Please keep her in your duas and forgive any debts or wrongs.

> With faith in the resurrection, the family of \[Name\] announces her passing on \[Date\]. Mass of Christian Burial: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\], Father Alvarez presiding. The rosary is recited the evening before at \[Time\] in the chapel of the funeral home, and the choir she sang with for forty years will lead the hymns.

### Secular

> \[Name\] left us on \[Date\], after ninety-one years of gardening, arguing about baseball and feeding everyone who walked through the door. There will be a gathering to remember him at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Wear something bright, he hated black, and bring an appetite.

> We are heartbroken to share that \[Name\] died on \[Date\]. She was a nurse for thirty years, a hiker who never turned back early, and the best aunt anyone ever had. A memorial will be held at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Stories welcome, speeches optional.

> Our colleague and friend \[Name\] passed away on \[Date\] after a brave year. The office closes on \[Date\] so that everyone can attend the service, \[Place\], \[Time\]. A card is going around the fourth floor, and a collection has started for her daughters' education fund. HR can answer questions about leave.

> \[Name\] died at home on \[Date\], as she wished, with the dog on the bed and the radio on. No service is planned, by her instruction. If you would like to do something, plant a tree, or call someone you have been meaning to call. She would have liked that more than flowers.

## What to include and what to avoid

Include the full name, including a nickname if that is how people knew them, the date of death, the service details and one request for the reader. Add the age if the family is comfortable with it. Mention who is writing when the sender's number might not be recognized.

Avoid the cause of death unless the family has chosen to share it, the names of hospitals or doctors, anything about the will or the estate, and the home address in a message that may be forwarded. Keep stock phrases to a minimum and let one honest detail do the work.

## Choosing the register

### Short and plain

For the first message, when arrangements are unsettled, and for people who would rather hear the fact than a eulogy.

### Religious

When the service is in a church, synagogue, mosque or temple and the readers share the tradition. Use the wording the community expects.

### Secular

For memorials outside a place of worship and for people who want the announcement to sound like the person who died.

## Reaching everyone at once

Once the wording is right, the hard part is sending it to forty people without forty conversations. The memorial services page on Eventi delivers the announcement to a list with Attending and Unable to attend buttons, reminds only those who have not answered, and shows the family who is coming.
