Death of a family member

# Announcing the death of a family member
in your own voice.

When the person who died is your mother, your brother or your husband, the announcement is written in the first person and carries your relationship in the opening line. That is what makes it different from a formal notice. These eleven sample announcements of the death of a family member cover a parent, a grandparent, a sibling, a spouse and a partner, each with a line that sounds like a family and the service details that readers need, with placeholders for the name, date, place and time.

One message to everyone, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons.

## Writing as the family

Say the relationship first. Our mother, my husband, our brother. Readers immediately know who is writing and how to reply. It also sets the tone: an announcement from a daughter reads differently from one issued by a funeral home, and it should.

Add one line of who they were. Not a biography, a single detail. A carpenter who sang badly. A grandmother who kept every secret. Sixty-one years of marriage. It is the line people will mention when they reply, and the one you will be glad you wrote.

Then the arrangements, in their own sentence. Service, place, date, time, and whether there is something afterward. If a burial is private and a memorial public, say both so nobody turns up to the wrong one.

## Sample announcements by relationship

Eleven messages. Replace \[Name\], \[Date\], \[Place\] and \[Time\], and change the ages and details to your own.

### A parent

> It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, \[Name\], on \[Date\]. She was 88 and had been unwell for some time, cared for at home by her daughters. The funeral will be held at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. All are welcome to join us afterward at the parish hall for tea and sandwiches.

> Our dad, \[Name\], died on \[Date\]. He was a carpenter, a Little League coach and a terrible singer who sang anyway, usually in the truck with the windows down. There will be a service at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Come as you are. He never owned a tie and would not expect you to.

> The children of \[Name\] announce that their father died on \[Date\], following an illness he bore without complaint. Burial is private. A memorial open to friends, colleagues and former students is planned for \[Date\] at \[Place\], and the full details, including parking, will come in a separate message next week.

> My mother, \[Name\], passed away this morning at \[Place\] with all four of us around her. We are grateful for the care she received from the night nurses especially. Arrangements are being made with the funeral home and I will send the details here by tomorrow evening.

### A grandparent or sibling

> Our grandmother, \[Name\], died on \[Date\] at the age of 96, surrounded by three generations of the family she built from nothing after arriving in this country. Her funeral will be at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the public library she visited every Tuesday.

> Grandpa \[Name\] left us on \[Date\]. He had a good, long life and went gently, in his own chair, after a game of cards. The family will receive visitors at \[Place\] on \[Date\] from \[Time\]. Bring your stories, he would have wanted a full room and a loud one.

> I am writing to let you know that my sister, \[Name\], died on \[Date\]. She was 52. A service to remember her will be held at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Her children ask that you wear her favorite color, blue, and that nobody says she lost a battle. She hated that phrase.

> Our brother \[Name\] passed away unexpectedly on \[Date\]. We are still coming to terms with it and may be slow to answer messages. The funeral will be at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Please pass this along to his friends from school, the cycling club and the Saturday market.

### A spouse or partner

> After 61 years of marriage, my husband, \[Name\], passed away on \[Date\]. He was my best friend and the only person who ever beat me at Scrabble. A service will be held at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\], followed by a reception at our home. Please join us, and please do not bring anything.

> My wife, \[Name\], died on \[Date\] after a short illness. She was 47. Our children and I are being held up by relatives, friends and the parents from school, and we thank you all. A gathering in her memory: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. She would want music, so there will be music.

> I lost my partner, \[Name\], on \[Date\]. We were not married but we were everything to each other for 19 years, and the house is very quiet. There will be a small ceremony at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. I would be glad to have you there, and glad of company in the weeks after.

## What to include and what to avoid

Include the relationship, the full name, the date, one personal line, the service details and any request about flowers or donations. If the announcement goes to people who may not have your number, add your own name at the end.

Avoid listing every surviving relative in a message, which belongs in the obituary, and avoid details of the illness or the final days. Do not include the home address when the message may be forwarded. Send it privately to the people who should have it.

## Who to tell, and in what order

### Immediate family, by phone

Parents, children, siblings and the spouse hear it in a call or in person, before anything is written.

### Close friends and extended family

A personal text or call from someone in the family, the same day where possible.

### The wider circle

Neighbors, colleagues, clubs and congregations get the announcement once the service is arranged, in one message to everyone.

### Institutions

The employer, the bank, the doctor and the landlord get a short factual note from the person handling the estate, later.

## One message, everyone told

A family rarely has the strength to send the same news fifty times. The memorial services page on Eventi sends the announcement to the whole list, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons, and shows who is coming so the family can plan the meal and the seating without making calls.
