Memorial service announcement

# Memorial service announcements
that get people to the right place on time.

A memorial service announcement is simpler than a death announcement because the news is already known. Its job is logistics with warmth: the place, the date, the time, what will happen and what to bring, and a way for people to say they are coming. These ten memorial service announcement templates cover the general invitation, religious services including a memorial Mass and an unveiling, the day-before reminder, a change of venue and the thank-you message afterward, with placeholders for the name, date, place and time.

One message to everyone, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons.

## What a memorial announcement should cover

The place with enough detail to find it: the name of the venue and, if it is unfamiliar, a street or a landmark. The date with the weekday. The time, and when doors open if that is different. The shape of the event, so people know whether to expect a formal service, an open microphone or a meal.

Then what people can do. Send a photograph for the slideshow. Prepare a short memory. Wear a color. Bring a dish. A memorial that asks something small of its guests feels shared rather than attended.

Finally, a way to say yes. The family needs a number for the caterer and the chairs. Please let us know if you are coming, or a button to tap, turns a message into a count.

## Memorial service announcement templates

Ten messages in three groups. Replace \[Name\], \[Date\], \[Place\] and \[Time\].

### General memorial announcements

> Memorial service for \[Name\]: \[Date\], \[Time\], \[Place\]. Light refreshments follow in the garden room, and the florist has been asked for white flowers only. Please let the family know whether you are attending so they can plan seating and catering, and tell them about any dietary needs.

> You are invited to a memorial gathering in honor of \[Name\], who died on \[Date\]. We meet at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\] to share memories, her favorite music and a potluck meal. Dress is casual, as she would have insisted, and children are very welcome.

> The family of \[Name\] will hold a memorial service at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. There will be an open microphone for anyone who wishes to speak, limited to three minutes each so that everyone has a turn. His brother Tom will host, and a slideshow runs before the start.

> Please join us for a service of remembrance for \[Name\], \[Date\], \[Time\], \[Place\]. Parking is available in the lot behind the building and along Elm Street. For those who cannot travel, a livestream link goes out the morning of the service, and a recording will be available afterward.

### Religious memorial services

> A memorial Mass for \[Name\] will be offered at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\], one month after his death. The family invites all who knew him to attend and to stay for coffee and pastries in the parish hall afterward. His grandchildren will do the readings.

> The unveiling of the headstone for \[Name\] takes place at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\], followed by a short service of psalms and a meal at the family home. The cemetery is a twenty minute drive from the synagogue, and a minibus leaves from there at noon. Please let us know whether you are coming for the meal.

> Memorial prayer meeting for \[Name\]: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\], with the sharing of food in her memory afterward. Family and friends are welcome. Please wear white if you are able and remove shoes at the entrance to the hall. Chairs are at the back for anyone who cannot sit on the floor.

### Reminders, changes and thanks

> A reminder that the memorial service for \[Name\] is tomorrow at \[Time\] at \[Place\]. Doors open thirty minutes earlier. If you have a photo for the slideshow, please send it to Rachel by tonight, and if you are speaking, please keep it to three minutes.

> The memorial for \[Name\] has been moved indoors because of the weather forecast. Same date and time, \[Date\] at \[Time\], but the new location is \[Place\], the hall beside the library. Please share this with anyone who may not have seen it, especially those traveling in.

> Thank you to everyone who came to remember \[Name\] yesterday. The family was deeply moved by the room and by the stories. If you took photographs, please share them with us. A tree will be planted in her name at Riverside Park this spring, and you will be invited.

## What to include and what to avoid

Include the venue, date, time, the format, any request of the guests, who to contact, and whether there is a stream for people far away. If children are welcome, or not, say so kindly. If there is a reception, give its location too.

Avoid repeating the full death announcement at the top. One clause, who died on \[Date\], is enough. Avoid a long list of speakers and readings, which belongs in the printed order of service. Keep the message to what people need before they arrive.

## Timing the messages

### The announcement, as soon as the venue is booked

Usually one to three weeks before a memorial, longer if people must travel. Earlier is better than perfect.

### A reminder the day before

Short: time, place, doors open, parking. Send it only to people who have not already answered, or to everyone if the details changed.

### A note the morning of, if needed

Weather, a room change, a road closure. One or two sentences.

### A thank-you within a week

To everyone who came and everyone who could not. Mention what the family plans next, if anything, and ask for photographs.

## Knowing who is coming

The memorial services page on Eventi sends the announcement to the family's list with Attending and Unable to attend buttons, so the count comes back without phone calls. The reminder goes only to those who have not answered, and the thank-you can go to everyone who came.
