Death announcement on social media

# Death announcements for social media
that reach everyone without oversharing.

A death announcement on social media reaches the people the family could never list: old classmates, former colleagues, the neighbor who moved away. It also reaches them all at once, which is why the closest relatives must be told before anything is posted. These ten examples cover a Facebook post with service details, a short Instagram caption, and messages for a WhatsApp status or family group, with guidance on what to share publicly and what to keep to direct messages.

[Let people know](/solutions/memorial-services)

One message to everyone, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons.

## Before you post

Tell the closest people first, by phone or in person. A post travels in minutes, and a sibling learning of a death from a comment thread is a wound that does not heal. Agree within the family on who posts, when, and what the post says.

Decide what is public. The name, the date and the service details are usually fine. The cause, the hospital, the home address and photographs of the final weeks are not. If the person who died kept a small online life, consider whether they would have wanted a public post at all.

Choose the photograph with care. One the person liked of themselves, from a good year, is the right one. Skip the hospital bed, and skip the selfie with you in it unless that is how everyone knew you together.

## Social media death announcement examples

Ten messages for three platforms. Replace \[Name\], \[Date\], \[Place\] and \[Time\].

### Facebook posts

> It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that my father, \[Name\], passed away on \[Date\]. He was surrounded by family and the nurses he had been teasing for weeks. Details of the service will be posted here once they are confirmed. Thank you for the love you have shown our family.

> Our family is grieving the loss of \[Name\], who died peacefully on \[Date\] at the age of 72, with the radio tuned to the ballgame. Memorial service: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. Everyone who knew her is welcome, from the choir to the crossing guards. Please no flowers, she would rather you came and ate something.

> Rest easy, \[Name\]. You taught half this town to drive and never once raised your voice, not even at me. The service is at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Leave a memory below, the family will read every one, and the embarrassing ones are welcome.

> We lost \[Name\] on \[Date\]. He was a husband, a father, a mechanic and the loudest fan at every game his kids ever played. The funeral will be at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. In lieu of flowers, support the youth league he coached for twenty years.

### Instagram captions

> \[Name\], 1941 to \[Date\]. Grandmother, baker, keeper of every secret, winner of every argument. Service details in the comments. Thank you for the messages, we are reading them all, even if we cannot answer each one.

> Saying goodbye to the kindest man I knew. \[Name\] passed away on \[Date\]. The memorial is at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. If you have photos of him, especially from the boat, please send them. We are making a book for his grandchildren.

> My mom, \[Name\], left this world on \[Date\]. She loved this garden and so I am posting it, tomatoes and all. There will be a gathering at \[Place\] on \[Date\] at \[Time\]. Hold your people close tonight.

### WhatsApp status and family groups

> Family group: Aunt \[Name\] passed away this afternoon at the hospice. Uncle Ray is with her and the twins are on the way. We will share arrangements as soon as we know. Please do not post anything publicly until the cousins in Chicago have been told.

> In loving memory of \[Name\], 1950 to \[Date\]. Funeral: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. Message me privately for the house address and shiva hours. This status disappears tomorrow, so screenshot it.

> Neighbors, \[Name\] from number 14 died on \[Date\]. Her son asked us to let the street know. Funeral: \[Place\], \[Date\], \[Time\]. An envelope for flowers is at number 9 if you want to chip in, and her cat is being looked after by the Nguyens until the family decides.

## What to include and what to avoid

Include the name, the date, one line of who they were, the service details and what people can do. Say whether comments are welcome, and if the family cannot reply to each one, say that too. People understand.

Avoid the cause of death unless the family has agreed to share it, anything that identifies the home, and tagging relatives who may not have been told. Do not post on the dead person's own account without the family's agreement, and do not post photographs of the body or the final days.

## Platform by platform

### Facebook

The fullest version: news, a line of memory, service details and a request. Turn on comments if the family can bear to read them, and pin the post.

### Instagram

One photograph and a short caption. Put the service details in the first comment so they can be updated without editing the post.

### WhatsApp status

A few lines that disappear after a day. Give the service basics and ask people to message privately for the rest.

### Family and neighborhood groups

Say who is allowed to pass the news on, and ask people not to post publicly until the family has.

## Telling the people who are not online

A post misses the aunt without Facebook and the neighbor who left WhatsApp. The memorial services page on Eventi sends the same announcement directly to a list, with Attending and Unable to attend buttons and a text fallback for people without WhatsApp, so the family knows who is coming.
