Academic researchers, market research panels and field teams

# One question per wave,
a response rate you can report

A panel of six hundred participants and a web survey that forty-one of them finished. Researchers in public health, economics and consumer studies lose the same people every wave: the ones who agreed to take part and then stopped opening email. A WhatsApp question with three buttons, opening with the study's name, gets answered on the bus. Import the panel, send one question per wave, remind the non-responders inside quiet hours, and export a clean file with the answer, the timestamp and the cohort.

WhatsApp

Hello, this is the Household Energy Study at State University. Wave 3, one question: in the last 7 days, did your household go without electricity for more than an hour?

YesNoNot sure

Yes

Thank you for taking part. That is all for this wave. Your participation code stays the same.

## How it works

1

### Import the panel

Paste participant IDs, names or pseudonyms and numbers from your spreadsheet. A group column for cohort, site or treatment arm lets you read the response rate per arm.

2

### Write one question, three answers

Short, neutral wording and three button labels, written once and approved by WhatsApp within about a day. The next wave reuses the template with a new question.

3

### Send the wave, remind non-responders

Participants who tap a button are done. The rest get a reminder inside the hours you set and a final one. Participants without WhatsApp receive the same question by text.

4

### Export and analyze

Each row carries the participant, the answer, the timestamp and the group. Export to a spreadsheet and load it into R, Stata or whatever you use.

## What you get

### Response rates you can defend

A one-tap answer inside the chat beats a link that opens a form that asks for a login. Attrition between waves drops when answering costs one second.

### Free text is captured

When a participant types instead of tapping, the reply is read, assigned to the closest answer and kept verbatim for coding.

### Response rate by arm

Counts per group on the dashboard show which site or cohort is lagging, so a field officer can follow up before the wave closes.

### A clean export every wave

No manual merging of screenshots. One spreadsheet per wave, same columns every time.

## What works today

- One list per wave: import the panel, send one question with up to three buttons, remind, export.
- Counts per answer and per cohort on the dashboard, free text kept verbatim.
- Reminders only to non-responders, inside quiet hours you set, and a final reminder before the wave closes.
- Text fallback from a toll-free US number for participants without WhatsApp.

## What comes next

- Multi-question surveys with branching and more than three choices per question.
- A connection to survey platforms and panel management tools so waves run on a schedule.
- Scheduled repeats for diary studies that ask the same question every day.

## Questions businesses ask

Straight answers before you send anything.

### How many questions can one survey carry?

### Does it integrate with our survey platform?

### What does a participant see?

### Can we use this under an IRB or ethics approval?

### How is it priced for a panel?

## Try it with your own list this week.
