WhatsApp broadcast list

# WhatsApp broadcast list:
set it up once, send to it every week.

A WhatsApp broadcast list is a saved set of up to 256 contacts that you can message in one go, each person receiving the message as a private chat. You create it from the Chats screen, name it, and reuse it as often as you like. This page walks through creating a list on iPhone and Android, editing recipients, deleting a list you no longer need, organizing several lists for different audiences, and the one rule that explains why some contacts never see what you send.

## Create a broadcast list on iPhone

1

### Open Broadcast Lists

On the Chats tab, tap Broadcast Lists in the top left corner. If you have never made one, the screen is empty apart from a New List button.

2

### Pick the recipients

Tap New List, then tap the plus sign to open your contacts. Tick everyone who belongs, up to 256 people, and tap Create.

3

### Send the first message

The list opens as a chat. Whatever you type here goes to every recipient as a separate one-to-one message. Attachments, voice notes and links all work the same way.

## Create a broadcast list on Android

1

### Open the menu

On the Chats tab, tap the three vertical dots in the top right and choose New broadcast.

2

### Select contacts

Tap each name or search by typing. Selected contacts appear as chips at the top. When the roster is right, tap the green check mark.

3

### Write and send

The broadcast opens like any chat. Send the message and WhatsApp delivers it to each person individually.

## Edit, rename or delete a list

### Add or remove people

Open the list, tap its name at the top to reach the list info screen, then Edit recipients. On Android the option sits under the three dots. Tick or untick names and save.

### Rename it

On the same info screen, tap the name and type a new one. Names are private to you, so be as blunt as you like: Overdue invoices or Choir altos.

### Delete a list

On iPhone, swipe left on the list in Broadcast Lists and tap Delete. On Android, open the list, tap the three dots, then Broadcast list info, then Delete broadcast list. Deleting a list does not delete the chats you already sent.

### Check who got it

Long press a sent message and open Info. WhatsApp shows delivered and read per recipient. Anyone missing from that screen never received it, usually for the reason below.

## Why some contacts never receive your broadcast

WhatsApp delivers a broadcast only to recipients who have your phone number saved in their address book. This is deliberate, to stop strangers from mass messaging people who never agreed to hear from them. It also means a new client who messaged you once but never saved you is on your list in name only. The message is sent on your side, shows a single gray tick, and never arrives.

There is no warning. The only way to find out is to check the message info screen or wait for the silence. The fix within WhatsApp is to ask each person to save your number, which works for a loyal regular and rarely for a parent who signed up last week. The fix outside WhatsApp is to send from a verified business number through a tool, where the saved-contact rule does not apply.

## Organizing several broadcast lists

### One list per audience, not per message

Make a list for each group of people who get the same kind of news: Monday class, Thursday class, parents of the under-10s. Rotate messages through the lists instead of making a new list each time.

### Keep each list well under 256

Long lists are slow to edit on a phone screen. Forty to eighty names is easy to maintain by eye.

### Review the roster monthly

People change numbers and leave. A quick pass through Edit recipients before the first send of the month keeps the delivered count honest.

### Note who is not on WhatsApp

Some clients only have a cell number. A broadcast cannot reach them at all, so keep a separate note or use a sender that falls back to a text message.

## When the list needs to answer back

A broadcast list is a sending tool, not a collecting tool. If the message is a question, each answer arrives as a separate chat and the tally is yours to build by hand. Eventi takes the same list, pasted or imported from a spreadsheet, and sends every contact their own WhatsApp message with up to three reply buttons. Taps are counted live, reminders go only to the people who have not answered, and the result exports as a list of names next to their reply. The message leaves from Eventi's verified number with your name in the first line, so nobody needs to have saved anything.

## WhatsApp broadcast lists: common questions

Straight answers before you send anything.

### How many people can be on a WhatsApp broadcast list?

### Do recipients know they are on a broadcast list?

### Can I add someone who is not in my contacts?

### Why does my broadcast show one gray tick for some people?

### Can I see replies to a broadcast in one place?
